I tried to update iTunes on my Vista machine but I kept getting the error Bonjour Service Cannot Start. I tried uninstalling iTunes but still could not get past this error. Finally I found a workaround. This solution is not the best answer because it installes iTunes without the Bonjour service which is used to share your iTunes music. That doesn’t concern me so it works for me.

Here are the steps:

  1. Start -> All Programs ->Apple Software Update
  2. Tools -> Open Downloaded Updates Folder
  3. Move the following Downloaded files to the C: root directory: itunes.msi and Setupadmin.exe
  4. Start -> Search for cmd
  5. Type cd ../ twice to navigate to the C: root directory
  6. Type setupadmin.exe hit enter
  7. Type itunes.msi and hit enter
  8. The installation begins

Now iTunes will install as normal but without the Bonjour service. I’m still hoping to find a fix which allows a normal install or update in the future.

I found this solution here.

Cataloging My Music

Posted by John

With my recent hard drive crash and subsequent new hard drive installed I have a fresh drive to try to organize in a more efficient way.

On my old hard drive I cataloged my music by artist name and then I dumped all the tracks into the folder. My new system will be set up differently.

First I partitioned my drive into several smaller sized partitions. One of the partitions is called Media. Within the media partition I have Music, LDS Music, and Videos. Since storage has become so cheap I am going to begin encoding all the music that goes onto KZION in both FLAC and MP3. FLAC is a lossless format but is compressed similar to an MP3. If I encounter a corrupted MP3 on KZION or I lose an MP3 I can encode quickly from the FLAC file without having to dig through my CD’s. FLAC can also be played in many different music players.

So my catalog looks like so

  1. LDS Music
    1. – Artist Name
      1. – Album Name
        1. – MP3
          1. – MP3 version of the files go here
        2. – FLAC
          1. – FLAC version of the files go here

I do have quite a few compilation CD’s and its always been a struggle to know what to do with them. I think this time I will use the same naming scheme as above and break up the compilation albums.

As soon as I get some spare change I’m going to purchase another 160 GIG hard drive and create a back up to clone each night.

From: This, Too, Shall Pass. - I am a Child of God

I found this blog entry this evening from a young college student and it really lifted my spirits. I get a lot of email from people all over the world who write to tell me how much they appreciate KZION. But once in awhile I receive something that reminds me of just how strong an influence LDS music can have.

Today I got up around 10:30, then laid in bed listening to KZion Internet Radio for a long time. KZion Internet Radio is one of my favorite things to listen to…all spiritually uplifting, appropriate music. Not all Church music, mind you, but all uplifting music. Excellent listening, calming. I listened to KZion through most of the time I was waiting to join the Church, and it gave me strength to carry on despite adversity, never surrendering to the temptation to simply agree with my family, never succumbing to the pressure of my peers.

Thank you Keith! I wish I could pass this along to every LDS artist on KZION. I’m not sure they realize what an impact they are making with their music.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir dominates classical charts

In recent weeks, a full 20% of the 15 titles on the Top Classical Albums chart have been occupied by one act. Those three spots do not belong to some fresh-faced newcomers, but to one of the choral world’s most venerable institutions: the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Its newest album, “Choose Something Like a Star,” released Feb. 15, celebrates the music of American composer Randall Thompson. It debuted at No. 3. Like its chart-topping brethren “America’s Choir: Favorite Songs, Hymns, & Anthems” and “Peace Like a River,” this latest MTC release comes from the group’s own label, also called Mormon Tabernacle Choir, which was established two years ago.

Congratulations Motabs!

Speaking of NPR’s Fresh Air. I just finished listening to Clarinetist and Composer Don Byron by Terry Gross.

Classically trained, he has performed and recorded music by Henry Mancini, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Ornette Coleman, Frederic Chopin, Duke Ellington, William C. Handy, Raymond Scott and klezmer music from Mickey Katz.

Excellent!

Coming Soon: MP3tunes.com

Posted by John

Michael Robertson, the founder and former CEO of MP3.com, will announce next week that he is starting a new digital music company called MP3tunes. Robertson will unveil MP3tune’s first service - an online music store focusing on high-quality music downloads. Unlike other popular music stores, MP3tunes will offer all tracks without digital rights management (DRM). This ensures that paying customers can use the music they purchase on any player or computer, as well as make unlimited copies of their songs and burn their music onto CDs.
