Here’s a very detailed review of the soon to be released Windows Media Player 11. There are no screenshots but you can download a beta version on Wednesday.
From what I have read WMP11 is going to exceed the Apple iTunes in ease of use, GUI, organization and presentation of media files.
As a hardcore Apple fanatic, I am tempted to dismiss this as typical M$ hype that can’t deliver on its promises.
But it will be interesting to see and I hope it does give iTunes a run for its money. Apple has staked a lot on iTunes and I’m sure the competition would be good.
Plus, I almost feel sorry for M$ these days. They could use a break.
I don’t know if you have ever used iTunes on a PC but it doesn’t perform anywhere near as well as it performs on a Mac. It’s slow, unresponsive, freezes for long periods of time, and managing video is even worse.
I used to manage all my music with iTunes which is over 7,000 tracks but it got so bad that I dumped all the music from iTunes, and now I only use it to transfer files to my iPod and purchase music from the Apple store.
Once I add an album to iTunes, I transfer to my iPod and then delete it from iTunes. In that sense, iTunes works perfectly.
Well that’s too bad. I have a lot of music in iTunes and though it doesn’t perform nowhere near as bad as you describe it can be sluggish at times. I suppose Apple doesn’t devote a whole lot of resources to developing Windows apps but that is still surprising because I thought its purpose was to introduce newbies to the wonderful world of Apple.
iTunes navigation could certainly be better. Plus I would like better handling of podcasts.
I bet Apple has been resting on its laurels since it has pretty much dominated the music/mp3 player market. Hopefully M$ can give it a run for its money so it will force them to make iTunes better for both platforms.
