Echoing my thoughts and interests

Have you ever looked at all of the charges added to your phone bill? The actual charges for my home phone line is $26.50 per month.

  • Extended Area Calling - $1.00
  • Residence Line - $11.00
  • Jack and phone Insurance - $5.95
  • Caller ID - $6.95
  • Non-Published Service - $1.60

That’s fine. I don’t mind paying $26.50 for a phone line BUT that’s not all. I also HAVE to pay

  • Federal Excise Tax - $1.04
  • State Sales Tax - $1.94
  • City Sales Tax - $.61
  • Recovery of Municipal Telecommunications Tax - $1.55
  • State 911 - $0.13
  • Local 911 - $0.65
  • Federal Universal Serv Fund - $0.70
  • Utah Universal Service Fund - $0.24
  • Telecommunications Relay Service Fund - $0.10
  • Utah Poison Control Center Surcharge - $0.07
  • Federal Access Charge - $6.44

Total $13.36

Grand total monthly phone bill - $39.86

Thirty-five percent of my phone bill goes to taxes, fees, and surcharges. I can’t think of anything else I buy where there is an additional 35% in taxes and fees added to the cost, except maybe gasoline.

I have been pushing Shelly to let me cancel our Qwest line and just use our cell phones as our home phone but she’s not budging.

You could always get Vonage like me! :p~

  2. John Said,

Uhm, you mean the phone service you use that never works? :)

  3. Andy Said,

But you get the same problem on cell phones too - I think my last bill had an extra 25% added on in taxes. Personally I think this should be investigated under false advertising laws when they advertise $50/month service but then bill you about $65

  4. John Said,

You’re right Andy. I was thinking about that after I posted. I used to work for Sprint and we had so many people coming into the store to complain about their bill, with charges that nobody could ever explain.
